You can do countless checks to ensure food is treated correctly within your premises, but if you're buying stock from suppliers that don't share your standards, these checks count for nothing! There are several indications that your supplier is able to provide you with food meeting hygiene requirements -
- Are they registered with the local authority? You can find this out by searching for the business on the Food Hygiene Rating register.
- The register will also provide details of a potential supplier's food hygiene rating and last local authority inspection. You can use this to help decide if you want them to supply your business.
- Also consider using reputable suppliers. This does not mean you have to use large supermarkets with the resources to employ EHOs. Small businesses that have a good reputation locally can be just as good!
- Are your suppliers providing allergen information? They have the same legal obligations as your business, so should provide you with information to pass on to the final consumer.
- Does the business hold any certification or quality assurance? This can be a good indication of consistent standards.
